According to the Clarksville Police Department, a man was shot multiple times after he allegedly broke into a home, and the resident opened fire during the overnight hours on Monday.

Officers said when they arrived at the townhome complex, they found the man suffering from gunshot wounds to the back and hand. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Police said the woman told them she was awakened by her dogs barking and thought her husband was at the door at first, only to find it was another man.

A fight ensued between the two, who police say are neighbors, before the shooting occurred.

Neighbors say the shooting prompted a large police response.

“There were five or six police cars and two ambulances,” Amanda Moore, who also lives in the neighborhood, said. “[It] brings a lot of concerns … it puts some fear in your heart for our little neighborhood.”

Clarksville police did not initially say if charges would be filed in the case, with all parties involved cooperating with the investigation.

Under the Tennessee castle doctrine, a homeowner has the right to use deadly force against a trespasser if they have a reasonable fear of death or serious injury.
