MESA, AZ (AZFamily) — A man is accused of fleeing a DUI stop with officers partially inside his car before crashing into a Mesa apartment complex Sunday evening.

Just before 8 p.m., first responders were called to reports of an intoxicated man acting aggressively toward others near Southern Avenue and Alma School Road.
When officers arrived, they found 35-year-old Faanoi Vaifale inside a vehicle, according to the Mesa Police Department. Officers noticed signs he might be drunk.
Police say Vaifale refused to get out of the car, so officers opened the door before he put the car in drive and took off while officers were still partially inside.
The car pushed one officer about five feet and struck another as it sped away, according to Mesa Police.
Authorities say Vaifale then pulled into the parking lot of a nearby apartment complex, and as officers arrived, he allegedly drove straight at their squad car before swerving and crashing into the side of an apartment building.

Vaifale then reportedly got out of the car and ran before he was subdued and placed in handcuffs. Police say Vaifale was taken to a local hospital as a precaution.
The damage to the apartment complex was estimated at about $25,000. The building was deemed unsafe for occupancy.
Vaifale faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including aggravated assault, criminal damage, failure to remain at the scene of a collision, resisting arrest and DUI.
No officers or community members were injured during the incident.
