TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Arizona Game and Fish is increasing patrols on trails and lakes this Labor Day as residents take advantage of slightly cooler weather and the holiday to head outdoors.

The department reports six people have died and 81 crashes have happened on Arizona’s waterways so far this year. Officials said the goal is to minimize risks.
Everyone on a watercraft needs a life jacket. Kids under 12 must wear theirs at all times, including on kayaks, canoes and paddleboards.
Boaters should also have a working fire extinguisher and inflatable type 4 throwables on board in case someone falls overboard. Anyone who will be drinking should make sure there is a sober operator.
Mark Frieberg, with Arizona Game and Fish Department, said operating a watercraft while impaired carries the same consequences as driving under the influence.

“When they catch somebody doing that, they can be arrested for operating a watercraft, even impaired to the slightest degree…It’s really no different than a DUI on the road. They can get arrested and taken to jail,” Frieberg said.
The Arizona Game and Fish Department will also patrol trails across southern Arizona this weekend. Off-highway vehicle riders should wear a helmet and seatbelt and ensure they have the correct number of passengers for their vehicle.
