PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A Chandler man has been arrested after he allegedly pretended to be a police officer while trying to get a hotel room comped earlier this week.

Nicholas Grayson Calfy, 30, is jailed on one count of felony criminal impersonation.
Around 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 1, police say Calfy was captured on surveillance video walking into the Fairfield Inn and Suites near Interstate 10 and Chandler Boulevard. Calfy was reportedly wearing a black vest that said POLICE, a cloth badge and had a holstered gun on his hip.
Court documents say he told the hotel clerk that he was a member of the Mesa Police Department and that he needed a room comped for a domestic violence victim. After the clerk refused, Calfy reportedly said he spoke with his boss, who was angry that the room wouldn’t be free.
According to documents, the clerk believed the man was impersonating an officer because of his “disheveled look” and the poor condition of his teeth. She also noted that a woman holding a dog who came in behind Calfy wouldn’t look up.
Calfy and the woman then left the hotel without getting a room, documents say, but they left some luggage behind. The clerk then reported the incident to Phoenix police.
About half an hour later, a clerk at a neighboring hotel called 911 to report that a man wearing police gear was sitting at the back of the property and refusing to leave. The clerk said he had a gun, a Taser and handcuffs.
When Phoenix police officers arrived, the man was gone, but they reviewed surveillance video of the incident at the previous hotel.
Shortly before 1 a.m. the next morning, documents say Calfy returned to get the luggage. Police once again responded and pulled Calfy over as he was driving away.

Calfy reportedly admitted to wearing the vest and gun, but denied telling the hotel clerk that he was a police officer.
The woman with him, however, told officers that she had recently met Calfy and that they had been kicked out of a nearby hotel. Per documents, she said Calfy impersonated a police officer while she pretended to be a domestic violence victim as a way to get a free room.
Investigators found a BB gun in the car and a shirt that said “Sheriff’s Department.” Police say Calfy was also wearing a hat that said “Chandler FD Cadets.”
He was booked in the Maricopa County jail, where he’s being held on a $15,000 bond.
Records show Calfy has a criminal history, including a 2019 case in Mesa when he was arrested for allegedly cornering a kitten and kicking it multiple times. He later pleaded guilty to animal cruelty.
He also served prison time on other offenses, including convictions for criminal trespass, unlawful use of means of transportation and drug-related charges. He was released in May.
