PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A man trying to cross a major road in west Phoenix died after he was hit by a car early Monday morning.

According to police, Melvin R. Johnson, 58, was walking south on 51st Avenue when he tried to cross Van Buren Street against the light and was hit.
He died at the scene.
The driver was not impaired and stayed on the scene, police said.
Authorities closed the intersection but reopened it several hours later.
