PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The next generation of basketball fans won’t just grow up watching highlights of Diana Taurasi. Instead, they’ll walk past glimpses of her career right in the heart of downtown Phoenix.

On Thursday, a new street sign and mural dedicated to the Mercury legend were unveiled in downtown Phoenix. While the street sign was already dedicated to the Mercury star, the updated sign reflects the total number of points she scored in her 20-year career. Fans can’t miss the bright orange sign — 10646 Taurasi Way.
“We put up a street sign when she broke the WNBA scoring record, but then she just kept going, so we needed to update the sign,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said. “Her induction into the Ring of Honor seemed like the perfect milestone to celebrate.”
“It feels good, you know. I hope it symbolizes what this city is, hard work and discipline,” Taurasi said. “Those point demonstrate showing up for a city with one goal.”
Along with the updated sign, fans will see a stunning new mural outside Mortgage Matchup Center. The mural features a colorful portrait of Taurasi, silhouettes of her signature celebrations and her trophies.
Painted by Phoenix-based muralist Paige Reesor, the artwork celebrates Taurasi’s illustrious 20-year career in the Valley.
Taurasi thanked everyone for showing love at the event and throughout her storied career.
“Myself, my family, everyone who loves this team and this city, but for the future generation that can look up there, and with hard work, anything is possible,” she said.
“I feel like every time I come to one of these, I see some faces I hadn’t seen in a long time, and that feels really good. More than any basket, more than any championship, it’s really the faces that have made this 20 years so important to me and my family,” she added.
In honor of Taurasi’s Ring of Honor induction, the Phoenix Suns/Phoenix Mercury Foundation and the City of Phoenix are refurbishing three Valley basketball courts.

On Friday, officials unveiled the newly renovated basketball court at Harmon Park in south Phoenix. Taurasi was all smiles as Scorch cut the ribbon to show off the new purple and orange court.
Refurbishments at Verde Park and Kids Street Park are expected to be completed this fall.
For Taurasi, who was drafted first overall by the Mercury in 2004 and went on to bring the city three WNBA championships, the updated sign is a symbol of a deep, mutual bond with the community.
“Phoenix is home now,” Taurasi reflected. “The day I got here I knew I was going to be here for a long time.”
Taurasi is the league’s all-time leading scorer and she will be inducted into the Mercury Ring of Honor on Sunday. Taurasi’s No. 3 will officially be retired, joining fellow legends Cheryl Miller, Jennifer Gillom, Bridget Pettis, Michele Timms and her wife, Penny Taylor.
Taurasi is also the only player to win six Olympic gold medals. She announced her departure from the game of basketball last year, stating that she is “full and happy.”
