Rick and Robbe Bressler escaped the fire unharmed but said they were left with almost nothing after the blaze reduced their home to rubble.

Fire started July 9

The fire began July 9 after the Bresslers said they were having a peaceful evening at home. Robbe Bressler said her husband noticed a smell and went to check the back of the house before sounding the alarm.

“We just sat there for a few minutes. He says, ‘I smell something,’ and I said I do too. He went to the back of the house, and I heard him holler, ‘Get out,’” she said.

Within minutes, Robbe said, the fire had consumed their home. Fire officials identified the blaze as the Rolling Fire.

‘We have to depend on other people’

The fire left behind burned vehicles, melted metal and a home reduced to rubble and nearly 30 years of memories along with it.

“I feel so empty. I keep having memories of things that I could go and pick up,” she said.

With both vehicles destroyed and their home gone, the couple said they are now relying on others for help.

“Both of our cars burned; we couldn’t do anything,” Robbe said. “We have to depend on other people. We’re not used to doing that.”

Her daughter, who rushed to the scene after seeing smoke, said the uncertainty surrounding the couple’s safety made the situation especially difficult.

“We saw the smoke and came running because we didn’t know if they were in their home or dead or alive or anything, so it’s been real hard,” said Michelle, a friend of the family.

Investigation ongoing

The Mayer Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire. The Bresslers said they are waiting on their insurance as they determine next steps.

“Yeah, I have no idea what we’re going to do,” Robbe said.

The family has started a GoFundMe to help them restart their lives.
