CHANDLER, AZ (AZFamily) —Monsoon storms can bring winds up to 60 miles per hour, and tree crews say much of the damage homeowners see every summer could be prevented with routine maintenance before the season peaks.

A crew from Pros Trees and Landscaping was working on a job in Chandler when they spoke about the importance of pre-monsoon tree care.
Why trimming matters
Operations manager Jess Martinez said cutting back and thinning out trees around a home is critical before monsoon season.
“When you go in there and do preventative maintenance and trim the trees, it gives it better stability with anchor roots in there and then not heavy on branch, so when you get those winds that are going like crazy, you get that tip weight that tends to snap,” Martinez said.
Martinez said a tree that has not been thinned out will have branches and leaves that act like a sail, catching wind and potentially toppling the tree. He also said it is important to ensure a tree is not weighted down at the ends, which can make it susceptible to being ripped out of the ground.

The cost of waiting
Tree services recommend hiring a licensed company sooner rather than later. Trimming a tree in the yard is significantly less expensive than removing one from a structure after a storm.
“If you would have done routine maintenance, it would have cost one-quarter less,” Martinez said.
