Royal Cothrun, 14, was on a bike ride in Gilbert in June.
With temperatures above 100 degrees, he came across a woman who was lost, confused and struggling in the heat. Without hesitation, he stopped.
“I don’t even know, she just looked like something was wrong, so I started talking to her,” he said.
The woman, Teresa Morgan, is a beloved mother recently diagnosed with dementia.
After becoming disoriented, she unknowingly wandered miles from home after visiting a nearby grocery store.
“I knew it was hot. She was sweating,” Cothrun said.
Instead of riding off, Royal stayed by her side, getting her to shade, and was able to get Teresa to remember her son Jeff’s phone number.
“It’s incredible really, what he did,” Jeff Morgan said.
Jeff said Cothrun explained the situation, racing over minutes later before the Gilbert Fire Department arrived on scene. He said what Cothrun did wasn’t just helpful, it was life-saving.

“Just so lucky, so fortunate that he He ran across her and he cared enough to stay with her and to take care of her,” Jeff Morgan said.
Cothrun’s mom said she’s proud, but not surprised. Helping people has always been part of who her son is.
“Super proud, obviously he was calm. He was compassionate,” she said.
“The outcome could have been, would have been much, much worse had he not done what he did,” a firefighter said.
Cothrun will be honored by the Gilbert Fire Department and the Air National Guard, but the family he helped said he’ll always have another title too: a hero.
