Quincy Mays, 54, was arrested Sunday on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and other related crimes.

Prosecutors say Mays and his girlfriend were involved in an argument that turned physical that morning at his girlfriend’s home in Avondale.

As police were being called to the argument, the caller reported hearing a gunshot and seeing Mays flee the scene in a white Ford Bronco, court documents say.

When officers arrived, they were told that Mays had forced himself into the locked residence and into the master bedroom, leading to the argument and police being called.

After hearing a gunshot inside the master bedroom, the caller left the home, and Mays reportedly chased that person while holding a pistol, documents say.

The girlfriend was hospitalized in stable condition. Documents say she was shot in the side of her face and was unable to provide a statement about the incident to police.

Officers were given permission to search the residence, where they found a silver pistol in the laundry room.

Police then searched for Mays and the white Ford Bronco. The vehicle was found at his home on 56th Drive in Laveen. Police waited at the home for Mays and took him into custody.

Court documents say a 2-year-old boy was sleeping in the bed of the master bedroom at the time of the shooting, and there were extensive damages to the bedroom and other parts of the home.

Officers obtained surveillance video from the Avondale home, which allegedly showed Mays at the home at the time of the shooting, then fleeing in the Bronco.

Police spoke with several witnesses who were at the home, and they were able to provide similar statements of what happened, documents say. The witnesses told police that Mays has a history of using drugs and being violent.

When being interviewed by police, Mays allegedly said he could not remember if he was responsible for the shooting. He then waived his right to provide a statement.

Court documents say Mays has a history of violent offenses, is prohibited from possessing a weapon and is on probation in Maricopa County.
