Smoke from Pocket Fire impacts Flagstaff; ozone alert issued through Tuesday

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The storm system that brought windy, cooler weather to Arizona is expected to stall over Nevada for the next couple of days.

It’s weakening, so winds here shouldn’t be as strong, but the slightly cooler air will linger across the state for several more days.

After that, a ridge of high pressure is forecast to build back into Arizona from the southeast, bringing a steady warmup. Highs are expected to climb from around 100-102 degrees early in the week to near 110 by the end of the weekend.

Meanwhile, smoke from multiple wildfires is impacting air quality. The Pocket Fire, burning southwest of Flagstaff west of Oak Creek Canyon, has pushed smoke into the Flagstaff area.

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality issued an ozone alert for Flagstaff and nearby communities through Monday and Tuesday. Ozone levels could reach unhealthy ranges.

Officials recommend limiting time outdoors in smoky conditions; an N95 mask may help if you must be outside. People with breathing issues may want to stay indoors.

As for monsoon storms in the Valley, it could be more than a couple of weeks before activity picks up. Don’t be surprised if Phoenix doesn’t see a major storm before July 15 — a significant dust storm may be more likely in the meantime.
