A federal judge sentenced 35-year-old Brooke McDonough, formerly known as Brooke Taylor, to four years in prison on June 10.

McDonough used to work as a branch manager for an unidentified East Valley bank, and between June 2021 and February 2022 she stole cash from ATMs and the bank’s vault.

McDonough also changed numbers on the monthly audits to hide the rising cash shortage.

Investigators found out about the scheme after McDonough resigned. Three other bank employees were placed on administrative leave.

McDonough used different ATMs at different banks to deposit smaller amounts of cash to avoid the federal requirement to report deposits of more than $10,000.

A jury convicted McDonough of embezzlement by a bank employee, structuring and transactional money laundering.

“Embezzlement is not a victimless crime,” U.S. Attorney Timothy Courchaine said in an emailed statement. “McDonough’s conduct caused real harm to her employer, to the integrity of the financial system, and to innocent co-workers whose careers were placed at risk by her actions. The sentence she received reflects the seriousness of that conduct.”
