Police say on June 5 around 10 p.m., a Chandler officers attempted to pull over a driver for a minor traffic violation near 116th Street and Riggs Road, east of Arizona Avenue. The driver reportedly refused to stop, and the officer alerted the department’s Street Crimes Unit to bring a grappler vehicle.

Officers witnessed the driver speeding, running red lights and passing in a no pass zone, according to authorities. An officer successfully deployed the grappler, stopping the reckless driver.

Video from Chandler police shows officers yelling at the driver to get out of the vehicle.

“Hands up! Driver, get your hands up!” the officer yells. “Driver, shut the vehicle off!”

“Put your hands out the window right now!” another officer yells while pointing a gun at the vehicle.

Investigators say an armed suspect ran into the desert during the stop and refused to obey the officer’s commands to stop reaching into their waistband.

“One bailing out,“ one officer radios. “Don’t be reaching!” one officer yells as they begin chasing the suspect. “Stop reaching! Stop reaching!”

The officer used his taser to stop the suspect, and they were taken into custody.

Three people were detained after the stop. Video shows one suspect walking backward toward police with their hands in the air.

Police say the driver was arrested for failure to yield, and one passenger is facing charges for having a firearm as a prohibited possessor.

This is one of several incidents where Valley law enforcement has stopped drivers with grapplers in recent weeks. On Monday, a man reportedly led police on a chase onto the Loop 202 Red Mountain in Phoenix before his vehicle was grappled by Mesa police.

Last week, Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers used a grappler to stop a wrong-way driver who led authorities on a pursuit through north Phoenix.
