UA committee calls for oversight of UAPD Flock camera use

Among many other impressions, the report notes procurement leaders could not easily search their databases or produce a list of vendors with which the university contracts for cloud storage. The committee said that creates a potential blind spot around data ownership and access by third-party data brokers.

Public logs showed searches by outside agencies with the stated reason “demonstration” or “protest,” the report says. It also found that at least one UAPD search of a national database listed the name of someone involved in active litigation against the university.

The committee expressed surprise at UAPD’s drone use, describing it as a recent expansion in capabilities. It also noted an absence of established protocols for drone flight waivers.

The report recommends permanent oversight involving staff, faculty and students; independent and financial audits; and a clear protocol explaining how people in the university community could be monitored. Experts interviewed for the story said policies vary widely and many universities and communities are navigating concerns.
