WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – President Donald Trump’s move to import 300,000 metric tons of foreign beef is drawing pushback from Republicans in cattle states.

Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), the number-two Senate Republican, posted on X, “Americans want US beef on the table – not foreign imports. Wyoming ranchers produce the highest quality beef in the world. Our ranchers don’t ask for special treatment. They simply want a fair marketplace. It needs to be easier – not harder – for Wyoming ranchers to feed America.”
Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) posted on X, “This hurts! American cattle producers have been disadvantaged for far too long. What our market really needs is a stable, America-First national policy that promotes American beef rather than continuing to import foreign beef as a quick ‘fix.’”
Cattle ranchers say the import of foreign beef directly benefits the “Big Four” meat packers. Three of those four companies are foreign owned.

Over the summer, a cattle farmer from Iowa described the cost of producing beef. “You know, the farmer, he maybe made a dime on that steak and he had to pay all the expenses. He got up in the middle of the night, make sure that cow didn’t have a calf on 20 below, made sure it was taken care of, fed, watered it. He put all the money in the ground to grow the crop, to feed it.”
In his August 21 social media post, President Trump promised the imported beef would be sold at 25% below current market prices.
