Prescott Valley woman found guilty of burglarizing, stealing meds from man she cared for

PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ (AZFamily) — A Prescott Valley woman was found guilty of burglarizing the home of a man she was hired to care for and stealing his medication, according to the Yavapai County Attorney’s Office.

Laura Ann Hopper, 59, was hired to do light caregiving and housekeeping services for a man who was recovering from surgery and had other medical issues, the attorney’s office said.

The man started suspecting that his pain medications were being stolen and later told Hopper that he no longer needed her help. After she was dismissed, she returned the key she was given.

But a few months later, in March 2024, home surveillance video captured Hopper entering the man’s home when he wasn’t there and taking pills from his bedroom, according to the attorney’s office.

At the time, she was already on felony probation from Maricopa County for a separate fraud-related crime.

A Yavapai County jury on Friday found her guilty of burglary in the second degree. She faces a maximum sentence of 16 years and three months in Arizona state prison. Her sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 9.

“Caregivers have access to a patient’s home, personal belongings, and financial affairs. When a caregiver steals from a patient, the patient’s trust is violated in a deeply personal way,” Yavapai County Attorney Dennis McGrane said in a statement.

“I believe this conviction and the lengthy sentence that Ms. Hopper will receive, sends a strong message that Yavapai County is not a place where a caregiver should even think about abusing their patient’s trust,” he added.
