GILBERT, Ariz. (KPHO/Gray News) — A pregnant woman and her unborn child were killed Thursday afternoon after a multi-vehicle crash on an Arizona freeway.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety reported the crash occurred just before 3 p.m. on the Loop 202 Santan near Power Road in the Gilbert area.
A large work truck failed to stop for traffic and rear-ended four vehicles, according to Arizona authorities. The force of the crash pushed one of those vehicles off the freeway and down a steep embankment.
The driver of that vehicle was the pregnant woman who died along with her unborn baby.

Authorities did not immediately identify the woman or say whether any charges would be filed against the truck driver.
Westbound lanes on the freeway were shut down for several hours while investigators worked the scene. The freeway has since reopened.
