TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – A Marana High student was arrested for allegedly trying to bring a weapon onto campus early Wednesday, Aug. 26, the same day there was a mental health crisis on campus.

The Marana Police Department and the Marana Unified School District said there were no injuries from either incident and they were not related or connected in any way.
The Marana Police Department said the student was caught with a machete in his backpack.
The Marana USD said the school’s system detected the weapon and the student never made it onto campus. The machete was recovered and was never taken out of the backpack or shown to anyone, according to the MPD.
The Marana Unified School District said there was also a mental health crisis on campus around the same time.
District’s message to parents
The MUSD sent the following message to parents about the incidents at the school on Wednesday.
Good evening,
Clear and timely communication is essential to maintaining trust and safety within our school community. Today, while our School Resource Officer was off campus, we requested assistance from the Marana Police Department in response to several unrelated situations, including a student mental health crisis and other policy violations. We are grateful for the department’s partnership and support.
This evening, a news report stated that a student was arrested for bringing a weapon onto campus. We would like to clarify what occurred and reassure our community that the significant police presence at school today was not related to that incident.

This morning, our weapons detection procedures and attentive security staff identified a student who turned away from the school entrance before passing through the detection system. A security monitor stopped the student and escorted them to the administration. The student disclosed that a machete was inside their backpack and explained that they had forgotten it was there. Because our safety procedures worked as intended, the student and the weapon were intercepted before entering campus.
The student was cited by law enforcement and received appropriate school consequences. At no time did the weapon enter campus, and no students or staff were in danger.
We are sharing this clarification because we are committed to keeping our community informed. The larger police presence today was related to separate matters, including policy violations and support for a student experiencing a mental health crisis.
We are deeply grateful to our dedicated employees, whose attentiveness helped keep our campus safe, and to the Marana Police Department for its continued partnership and care for our school community.

It is the second incident at a southern Arizona school in two days.
On Tuesday, Aug. 25, an Alice Vail Middle student was arrested after allegedly bringing a gun to school.
