PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A Phoenix man is accused of beating and killing his 76-year-old roommate with a construction helmet after a dispute over their electric bill.

Troy Yazzie, 31, was arrested Tuesday in Flagstaff and charged with second-degree murder in the death of his roommate. His roommate died two weeks ago in the hospital due to medical complications from the violent attack, according to court documents.
The fight between the two broke out on April 30 at the home they rented on Hazelwood Street, near Interstate 17 and 23rd Avenue. Yazzie’s roommate called police that night and told them he had been arguing with Yazzie over money Yazzie had stolen, police said.
Officers said they arrived to find the victim bleeding from his nose and with blood on his shirt; he told officers that Yazzie had beaten him. Yazzie was not at the scene; dispatchers initially heard him in the background of the 911 call, according to court documents.
The roommate told police that he had given Yazzie $50 for their electric bill. But when the bill was unpaid, he asked Yazzie for the money back. The victim said Yazzie got angry and then beat him with a white construction helmet, hitting him multiple times in the face, according to court documents.
The victim was taken to the hospital with severe injuries. A CT scan showed several facial fractures that required surgery, according to court documents.
He was taken in late May to a rehabilitation center, but about two weeks later, he developed medical complications.
He was taken back to a Phoenix hospital, where he died July 15. A preliminary report found that his death was due to blunt force trauma, according to court documents.

Authorities said they traced Yazzie to Flagstaff, where he fled after attacking his roommate. He had also met with his probation officer last week and told the officer that he was going to move back to Flagstaff to live with his mother, police said.
After being taken into custody, Yazzie admitted to police that he had punched his roommate in the face and hit him with his construction helmet, according to court documents.
Police have not released the name of the victim. It is unclear how long the two were roommates.
Yazzie is being held on $1 million bond. He was previously convicted of disorderly conduct for fighting, aggravated assault and sexual assault, according to court documents.
