GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Gray News) – A nurse in a neonatal intensive care unit was arrested after a 4-month-old baby in his care was found to have multiple broken bones and bruises across her body.

Authorities said the baby was born at 23 weeks in November and had been living at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital at the time she was hurt, in early March.
According to the affidavit, Kieran L. Ansley was taking over night shift duties for the baby’s usual night nurse.
When the parents returned to the hospital the next morning, Ansley got up from his seat and “jogged” to cut them off from getting to their baby’s room, pointing to the baby through the glass and saying the baby slept through the night. He also said he skipped the 2 a.m. care time because she was asleep, although the computer system showed it was completed.
When the parents got into the room, they noticed the baby’s tongue was “blue and almost black,” according to the affidavit.

Upon taking the baby out of her swaddle, her mother found several new bruises along her body.
The dayside care team and Center for Child Protection began to investigate and found several fractures, including in the baby’s femur, both tibias and left fibula, bruising on both arms, tongue, abdomen, buttocks and shin.
Ansley was charged with two counts of second-degree child abuse and two counts of fourth-degree child abuse.

According to WZZM, Ansley is no longer employed by the hospital.
