PORTHCAWL, Wales (Gray News) — A man in the United Kingdom kept his mother’s body in a freezer for years for financial gain, officials said.

Christopher Phillips, 60, was sentenced to more than two years in prison Monday. He pleaded guilty March 20 to preventing the lawful and decent burial of a dead body and to fraud by false representation.
South Wales Police began the investigation in February when they were called to a home to perform a welfare check on Sylvia Phillips, who had not been seen by her doctors since 2022.
Officers met Christopher Phillips at the home. When asked about his mother’s whereabouts, he told police she was in London with family but refused to give details or say where they lived.

When officers searched the home, they found Sylvia Phillips’ body in a freezer with flowers laid on top.
Police said Sylvia Phillips was in her 80s. A cause of death has not been determined.
