BELLE ROSE, La. (WAFB/Gray News) – Louisiana authorities say a man is facing charges in connection with the beating death of a 3-year-old girl.

According to the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrested Bernard JR Fleander, 26, on Thursday afternoon after the child was brought to the hospital unresponsive with significant injuries.
Fleander was booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center on charges that included first-degree murder.
Deputies said they were called to the Assumption Community Hospital earlier that morning after medical staff said they couldn’t save the girl despite life-saving measures.
Medical staff noted that the 3-year-old suffered massive internal bleeding with internal and head injuries.

The sheriff’s office reported that the beating happened over potty training.
Fleander was said not to be one of the girl’s parent, but he was caring for her and other children at the time.
Deputies said the child’s body was taken to a forensic facility, where an autopsy was conducted, and her manner of death was classified as a homicide.
The sheriff’s office said it has been in contact with the district attorney’s office regarding the case.
