LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A man and a young girl were found dead inside a southwest valley home Monday morning, following a shooting that left one officer injured, according to police.

The incident unfolded around 12:29 a.m. near Buffalo Drive and Peace Way when a woman called 911 stating that her boyfriend was attempting to set her on fire with a blowtorch. During the call, the woman further reported that she had been shot.

Officer Injured Entering the Home
Officers arrived at the residence on Pigeon Point Court shortly around midnight. Upon entering, officers located the suspect behind a closed interior door. The suspect immediately opened fire, striking one officer.
“One of our officers was struck by gunfire, and an LVMPD officer returned fire towards the suspect,” LVMPD’s Adam Seely said.
Following the exchange, officers retreated from the home, and the situation was declared a barricade. The injured officer, a female, was transported to UMC with non-life-threatening injuries, where she remains in stable condition.
On Wednesday, LVMPD identified the officer involved in the shooting as 36-year-old Officer Zaira Venegas-Hernandez. She is assigned to the Spring Valley Area Command, as part of the Tourist Safety Division. She has been placed on paid administrative leave until the incident is reviewed.
The woman who made the initial 911 call managed to escape the residence. She was secured by officers and treated at the scene for gunshot wounds.

SWAT Responds, Finds Two Dead Inside Burning Home
Crisis negotiators and SWAT were called to the scene. During the barricade, police reported that the suspect attempted to set the house on fire.
When SWAT and negotiators entered the residence to resolve the barricade, they located a man and a young girl suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were declared dead at the scene.
While the suspect, the young girl, and the female victim were in the home together, the exact relationships between them have not yet been officially confirmed by authorities.
Neighbors Woke to Emergency Response
Neighbors reported waking up to a massive police presence just after midnight. Roy, a resident of Pigeon Point Court, said he heard sirens and a helicopter but initially assumed the incident was further away.
“Usually, I would walk outside and look to see what’s going on… this time I didn’t do it, I think it’s across Buffalo on the other side and something is going on over there and I don’t need to worry about it, and I got back to sleep,” Roy said.
He was devastated to learn the tragedy took place only doors down from his home.
“I feel for that family, and I feel for all the neighbors being impacted by it. I feel so sad hearing that something like this could happen and so close to my home,” he added.
