BOULDER CITY, NV (AZFamily) — The Hoover Dam is temporarily closed to visitors as work is performed on a cableway system issue.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) said Tuesday that visitor access to the Hoover Dam is closed while crews address the equipment issue involving the facility’s cableway system.
The dam and power plant are still operating normally, USBR said.
“We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding while our teams work through this situation,” said Reclamation Lower Colorado Basin Acting Regional Director Genevieve Johnson. “Safety remains our top priority. While visitor access is temporarily paused, Hoover Dam and the powerplant are operating normally, and there is no risk to the facility.”
Officials said the 150-ton cableway system is near the parking garage and above the main access road. It’s used to move large equipment across the river and between the Nevada and Arizona sides.
USBR said that during routine maintenance, the cableway carriage shifted unexpectedly, placing additional stress on the system.

The area was secured as a precaution and a contractor is scheduled to return to the site Wednesday with USBR staff to assess the system again.
Officials have not provided an estimated date for visitor access to resume. Safe access is being provided for employees and contractors.
