WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – President Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general appears poised to advance toward a full Senate confirmation vote after the Justice Department formally eliminated a controversial fund that had stalled his nomination.

On Sunday, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche issued an order rescinding the proposed $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund,” writing that the action “establishes, beyond any doubt, that there is no fund.”
The move addressed the primary concern raised by Republican Sens. John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who last week blocked Blanche’s nomination from advancing out of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Both senators had insisted the fund be terminated in writing before they would support moving the nomination forward.
“It’s just that they refused to commit to writing what he testified to under oath,” Cornyn said during last week’s dispute.
On Monday, the two senators announced they were satisfied with the Justice Department’s action.
“We are pleased that the Department of Justice has issued a formal order terminating the anti-weaponization fund,” the senators said in a joint statement. “We look forward to voting to advance his nomination out of the Senate Judiciary Committee soon.”

The fund stemmed from a settlement negotiated by Blanche between the Justice Department and President Trump over the president’s lawsuit involving the IRS. It would have compensated people who said they were targeted by the Biden administration, including some Jan. 6 Capitol riot defendants.
Before Blanche formally rescinded the fund, Trump warned Sunday that he would seek to revive it if the Senate failed to confirm his nominee.
With Republican opposition now appearing to ease, Blanche is expected to clear the Judiciary Committee and advance to the full Senate, where he would need only a simple majority for confirmation.
The Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled a vote on Blanche’s nomination for Tuesday at 9 a.m. ET. If approved, the nomination would move to the Senate floor, though lawmakers are also facing an approaching August recess that could affect the timing of a final confirmation vote.
