TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – The attorneys of the man shot by Pima County deputies in April have filed a Notice of Claim against the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and Sheriff Chris Nanos.

Axeel Melendez is paralyzed from the chest down following the shooting, which the PCSD said was the result of a likely swatting incident.

A Notice of Claim is a precursor to a lawsuit, and the family is asking for $80 million for Axeel and $8 million for his mother, Carmen.
In a release about the Notice of Claim, lawyers for Melendez and his mother Carmen said “deputies fired eight shots at Melendez, according to PCSD body camera footage. Two bullets hit him – shattering his leg, breaking ribs, and leaving him with a spinal cord injury. Melendez is now paralyzed from the chest down.”

Axeel’s attorney Dev Sethi said, “Axeel is a shooting victim whose life will never be the same.”
13 News reached out to the PCSD for a comment, which said Sheriff Nanos does not comment on pending litigation.
