Deadly, dangerous week across in southern Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Southern Arizona has seen a rash of violent crimes and serious crashes over the last week.

While the long Memorial Day weekend has always been known for its accidents and crimes, this past week has been particularly bad.

Since May 20, four people have died, and three others have been injured in shootings. In that same time frame, five people were killed in accidents while nine were hurt.

13 News tracks all violent crime and serious crashes in southern Arizona. We have a breakdown of the major incidents below, but you can also check out our maps embedded below.

VIOLENT CRIMES

On May 19, two people were arrested after a shelter-in-place incident in the Sierra Vista-Hereford area. The Sierra Vista Police Department said Ayla Adams and Fabian Barquez-Martinez were both taken into custody on felony warrants.

On May 20, a woman and a dog were killed, and a man was injured, in a double shooting near East Wilcox Drive and South 7th Street in Sierra Vista. The SVPD said 43-year-old Calisha Schafer, of Sierra Vista, was found dead on the floor of the apartment. The man was shot in the hand and was taken to the hospital.

On May 22, two men died in a road-rage shooting near Speedway and Harrison in Tucson. The Tucson Police Department said 41-year-old Dustin Sean Sowards and 21-year-old Jacob Michael Leland got into a confrontation while driving and shot and killed each other.

On May 24, one person was injured in a shooting in the 2300 block of Cherry Hills Drive in Sierra Vista. The SVPD said 18-year-old Angel Valenzuela is wanted in connection with the incident that happened during a gun sale. A home was also hit buy gunfire.

On May 25, a suspect was shot and killed by an Arizona DPS trooper on Interstate 10 near Benson. DPS said it started as a traffic stop, and no one else was injured.

On May 25, a man was shot multiple times at a home on North 12th Street in Tombstone. The Tombstone Marshal’s Office said the victim was taken to a Tucson hospital and a suspect was taken into custody.

On May 25, police responded to a domestic violence incident at the Dollar General near Interstate 10 and Wilmot Road in Tucson. The Tucson Police Department said the victim went to the hospital, and SWAT was called out to arrest the suspect.

SERIOUS CRASHES

On May 19, a woman died after jumping from a moving vehicle near South Nogales and East Lumber Street in Pima County. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said 48-year-old Joann Carol Sample was riding in a car with her husband when she jumped out.

On May 21, a man was injured in a motorcycle crash near Benson and Valencia in Pima County.

On May 21, one person was killed, and another was injured in a head-on crash on SR 77 near Oracle. Arizona DPS said 42-year-old Ryan Felix, of San Manuel, died, and the other driver suffered a broken leg.

On May 21, a woman died in a head-on, wrong-way crash on Tangerine Road in Oro Valley. The Oro Valley Police Department said 42-year-old Shaweta Vasudeva was killed in the two-vehicle accident near Camino del Fierro.

On May 23, one person died and another was seriously hurt in a head-on crash on Double Adobe Road in McNeal.

On May 24, three people were injured in a UTV rollover crash near Interstate 10 and Empirita Road in the Vail area. The Mescal-JF Fire District said two were in critical but stable condition.

On May 24, a man was killed, and another person was seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash near Golf Links and Harrison in Tucson. The Tucson Police Department said 21-year-old embedded died and a 24-year-old passenger suffered life-threatening injuries.

On May 24, a motorcyclist was seriously injured in an accident near Speedway and Country Club in Tucson.

On May 24, a motorcyclist was seriously hurt in a crash near West Valencia Road and South Camino De La Tierra in Pima County. The PCSD said the motorcycle was involved in an accident with a truck.
