Emails show Tempe high school warned about locker room camera before arrest

TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — Emails obtained by Arizona’s Family show administrators at Corona del Sol High School were warned about a camera installed in a classroom used as a temporary locker room before a security guard was arrested on voyeurism charges.

The emails date back to 2024 and show that a dance teacher raised concerns shortly after the cameras went live, questioning why the cameras were not placed outside.

Email warnings begin in 2024

The first email is from the school’s assistant principal, dated Sept. 24, 2024, informing staff that the cameras were installed and rolling 24/7. The email added that students would need a different place to change.

That same day, a dance teacher emailed administrators questioning the purpose of the camera and why it was not placed outside. Arizona’s Family is not identifying the teacher at this time.

The teacher raised concerns that her whole classroom was visible to the camera, pointing out that students change in and out of gear and costumes on a regular basis. She requested that the camera be taken down or moved.

Second warning in 2026

A second email dates to July 2026. At that time, district officials said the girls’ locker room was under renovation.

The same teacher flagged the camera concern for a second time, pointing to the locker room issue and requesting the camera be turned off until the locker room was fixed.

Ex-security guard arrested

One month later, Antony Cruz, 28, a now-former security guard for the high school, was arrested. Police said he downloaded videos of girls changing. He is facing more than 100 counts of voyeurism.

The district sent a letter to families about the arrest.

A parent sent Arizona’s Family a photo last week showing the camera covered with a cardboard box.

Teacher defends her actions

The dance teacher then sent a third email defending her classroom and her actions. She said the incidents did not happen during school hours when she was responsible for students.

The teacher also said after-school staff members were not looped in about the protocols for the camera in the dance room.

Arizona’s Family has reached out to the Tempe Teachers Union for comment.
