Taishawn Terry Bailey, 23, was arrested Wednesday in connection with Tuesday’s deadly shooting that killed Charles Hendrix, 56, and Jerry Braggs, 64, according to the Phoenix Police Department.
The shooting happened shortly before 5 a.m. Tuesday near 16th and McKinley streets, south of Interstate 10.
Surveillance video reportedly showed Bailey near the bus stop with the two victims. At one point, court documents state Bailey fired multiple rounds at one victim, causing him to fall to the ground.
The second victim ran from the bus stop into the road, where he tripped and fell. Bailey then approached him as he was lying on the ground and shot him multiple times, investigators said. Witnesses say Bailey then ran off along McKinley Street.
The next day, investigators used GPS location data from Bailey’s cell phone and tracked him to a park near 44th Street and Baseline Road, where officers found him asleep on a playground. Police say he was armed with a 9mm handgun and taken into custody.
In an interview with police, Bailey reportedly admitted he was with the two victims at the bus stop for several hours but claimed he left before the shooting happened. However, cell phone records showed he was in the area at the time of the shooting and left afterward.
Bailey then changed his story, claiming he shot in self-defense, saying one of the victims lunged at him with a knife, according to court paperwork. He said that after shooting the first victim, he blacked out and shot the second victim.

During Bailey’s first court appearance overnight Thursday, state prosecutor Ashley Stetson said one of the victims was Bailey’s grandfather, but did not specify which man.
Investigators ssurveillance video disputed Bailey’s self-defense claims; he then admitted the gun he had on him was the same one used to shoot both victims. Authorities confirmed that cartridge casings recovered from the crime scene matched Bailey’s firearm, court documents state.
“Additionally, there are indications that the allegations were caught on surveillance video which does indicate or give some sort of evidence that the suspect claim of self-defense is not accurate,” Stetson said.
Police had initially believed a third victim might have been involved, but confirmed at the scene that no additional victims were found.
Bailey was booked into jail on two counts of first-degree murder. He’s being held on a $2 million cash-only bond.
