Three Benson councilmembers could be out of jobs

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Three Benson city councilmembers may have been recalled, according to early results from the election on Tuesday, May 19.

It’s a story 13 News first told you about in August, when the Committee for a Better Benson started the recall petition amid a protest over an aluminum recycling plant in town.

More than 2,000 people signed a petition against building the 200-acre plant, but it went ahead anyway.

The blowback from the community was swift and severe, and now three councilmembers appear to be out of a job.

While the results are not official and some ballots may be left to be counted, Patrick Boyle, Darren Hayes, and Levi Johnson were all losing their races as of 9 p.m. Derrick Fenn, Ross Kaplowitch, and Mark Boyle (Patrick’s brother) were leading.

Councilmember Nick Maldonado was also facing a recall, but he ran unopposed and will likely keep his job.

The Committee for a Better Benson also attempted to recall Benson Mayor Joe Konrad but did not get enough signatures to trigger the recall.
