The State Department has paused immigrant visa appointments worldwide.
The State Department said the reason is that it is conducting in-depth training at embassies and consulates.
A spokesperson said the goal is to make sure all officers are fully equipped to evaluate applicants comprehensively.
Specifically, officers are being trained to identify applicants who are likely to become dependent on public services.

The State Department does not want to grant visas to people who will become what it refers to as a “public charge.”
The Trump administration is also preparing to revoke the visas of up to 200,000 foreigners who have applied for or are currently seeking asylum status in the U.S. If the revocations happen, the move would be the largest single mass revocation of visas in U.S. history and would likely face legal challenges.
