TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – A new community technology hub opened in midtown Tucson and offers free computer access, digital literacy courses, workforce training, and youth programming to residents across southern Arizona.

The Desert Byte Cafe, located at 3027 N. Stone Avenue adjacent to We Care Tucson, opens to the public Tuesday, August 11. The space includes five desktop computers, six laptops available for in-cafe use, and a gaming station — all free of charge.
“Everybody needs it for one reason or another,” said We Care Tucson CEO MeMe Aguila. “Some may be doing homework, some work for their job, some looking for that job.”
The cafe is also the new home for We Care Tucson’s youth STEM and robotics programs, which served more than 1,600 kids in the past year. Digital literacy courses, workforce training, and tech workshops are open to all ages year-round. Spanish-language computer classes are also available.
Printing is free for the first five pages per day; additional page will cost 10 cents.
The Desert Byte Cafe is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hours are divided by audience: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for adults, 1 to 3 p.m. for everyone, 3 to 5 p.m. for kids, and 5 to 6 p.m. for anyone in the community.

Aguila said keeping the space safe is a priority, particularly during hours designated for children.
“If you’re going to have it open for kids, you can’t just have anybody in here,” Aguila said. “We decided designated hours and it had to be monitored. You can’t come in and gamble, you can’t go to unsavory websites.”
The Desert Byte Cafe was made possible through support from UnitedHealthcare, the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, Tucson Electric Power, and Desert Diamond Casino.
