TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – As students head back to class, Tombstone Unified School District is focused on preparing them for careers that extend beyond the town’s historic streets, Superintendent Sarah Cox said.
Cox said the district is intentionally keeping student pathways open rather than steering students toward a single direction.
“We’re real excited for those kids coming in to be able to find a path that’s going to fit what they want to do, right? We don’t just have one focus of college or career. We’re just making it very fluid, so when our kids leave, they can do both,” Cox said.
Mounted Color Guard draws national attention
Those paths include welding, military service and college. Students also have access to a program Cox said is one of a kind — a Mounted Color Guard that she described as the only one in the nation.
“One of those is our Mounted Color Guard. He took them out for Fourth of July, and they did several different events, and he said that he’s actually, we had a group graduate, and he had six more additional people show up for our Mounted Color Guard, which is the only one in the nation right now,” Cox said.
Superintendent returns to her alma mater
Cox is a Tombstone High School graduate who left Arizona for two decades before returning to lead the district. She said she did not hesitate when a position opened.

“As soon as a position came open in the district, I took it. That made it even neat because not only was I coming back to what helped create who I wanted to be, I was coming back to a lot of the same people that were here then. It is really neat to say that I went to school here,” Cox said.
Cox said she hopes the next generation of Tombstone students — the Yellow Jackets — leaves with the same pride in their hometown.
