Tucson Now: Mother, daughter graduating from U of A

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Jala Barazi and Aiya Tawakkol are a mother-daughter pair graduating from the University of Arizona.

While they may attend the same school, they are studying different subjects.

Barazi is studying leadership and hopes to apply what she’s learned to her work at the Syrian American Club in Houston. Tawakkol is a part of the college of physiology and wants to combine leadership and medicine in her work.

The unique experience has grown their relationship and helped them develop a deeper understanding for what they each go through.

Tawakkol says going to college at the same time as her mother has taught her perseverance and allowed her to see her mother in a different way.

“To see her light shine makes me want to do more,”Tawakkol said.

The experience has been wonderful for Barazi, and she hopes to inspire others to go back to school.

“It’s never too late,” Barazi said.

Barazi and Tawakkol joined 13 News’ Devyn Shea to talk about what it’s been like attending college together and their upcoming commencement ceremony.
