PAYSON, AZ (AZFamily) — An investigation is underway after a plane with two occupants crashed in northern Arizona late Monday night.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a Glasair Sportsman 2+2 crashed near Payson around 11 p.m. The crash was located west of the Polles Mesa mountain in the Mazatzal Wilderness, according to the Gila County Sheriff’s Office.
Gila County was assisted by helicopters from both the Maricopa County and Pinal County sheriffs’ offices. The former located the crash site, while the latter transported deputies to the site for an initial investigation because of the “remoteness and rugged terrain,” the Gila County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.
Officials identified the two occupants as Brad Lawrence, 75, and Carter Buckner, 19, both of Payson.

Details remain limited at this time. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the FAA are investigating the incident.
