PALOMINAS, AZ (AZFamily) — Rescue teams near the Arizona-Mexico border are fearing the worst after a woman was swept away by a flooded river Thursday while with a group that entered the state illegally, the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies said U.S. Border Patrol agents told them that a group of six had illegally crossed the border and then tried to cross the San Pedro River near Greenbush Draw, about 20 miles southwest of Sierra Vista, around 12:30 a.m.
But the floodwaters rose rapidly and the woman was swept away. Border Patrol later detained the other five near Naco and told agents what happened.
The woman is described as Hispanic, about 45 to 50 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches tall, 140 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes and was last seen wearing a gray shirt and black jeans.
The sheriff’s office’s search and rescue team started looking for the woman just before 3 a.m. Arizona DPS’ helicopter launched around 3:20 a.m. and drones were sent out around 4 a.m.

At around 10:30 a.m., search crews found a pair of black pants, a gray shirt, black shoes and a separate black shirt that deputies believe belonged to the missing woman.
The search was suspended at about 11:15 a.m. so crews can coordinate and get more resources, including cadaver K-9 teams. The search is expected to resume Friday.
