ATLANTA (ANF/Gray News) — A Georgia woman has filed a lawsuit after an alleged tissue sample mix-up led to an unnecessary hysterectomy.

The negligence suit was filed on Tuesday against several branches of Kaiser Permanente and laboratory staff members.
According to the lawsuit, Cassandra Barksdale, 43, was incorrectly diagnosed with endometrial uterine cancer.
Barksdale shared that she went to her OB-GYN at Kaiser Permanente Southwood Medical Center in Jonesboro to evaluate her uterine fibroids and unusual bleeding in January 2025.
Two months later, she underwent an endometrial tissue biopsy, but the lawsuit argues another person’s sample was mislabeled as hers before it was sent to an outside lab for testing.

When the test came back positive for aggressive endometrial uterine cancer, Barksdale was given a CT scan.
However, despite no evidence of cancer in the scan, she was still recommended for and underwent a full hysterectomy, the lawsuit stated.
According to the suit, the plaintiffs are seeking a jury trial and at least $10,000 in damages.
