TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – The suspect from last month’s mass shooting in downtown Tucson isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

On Tuesday, Aug. 11, a judge ruled that 21-year-old David Leroy French should be held without bond.
The Honorable Tracy Miller determined “there is clear and convincing evidence” that French is a danger to the community and the victims.
French’s next court appearance is set for Sept. 17. It will be a case management conference and motion to revoke probation from a previous aggravated assault case.
On Aug. 7, French was arraigned on more than two dozen charges for the mass shooting.
The Tucson Police Department said French shot nine people following a fight outside of Empire Pizza early in the morning on Sunday, July 19.

The TPD said all of the victims are expected to survive, with many released from the hospital days following the shooting.
The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team said officers working in the area quickly responded after hearing gunfire.

While other officers tended to the wounded, Tanner Wolverton spotted French running from the scene and told him to stop and drop his weapon.
French ignored Wolverton’s orders and was shot. He was taken into custody, and officers began rendering first aid.
On Aug. 4, authorities announced that French is facing more than two dozen charges. That includes several counts of attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault seriously injury, endangerment, discharging a firearm in the city limits, and prohibited possession of a firearm.
According to court records, French had a prior conviction of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
French was accused of pointing a rifle at a man in October 2024. He allegedly shot once, but the victim was not hit. He admitted that he was at the location, but did not remember shooting at anyone.
He eventually reached a plea deal and was sentenced to four years of probation.
