TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – The man whose dogs killed a neighbor in Pima County last year was sentenced to probation.

On Wednesday, Sept. 23, Martin Lopez Martinez was sentenced to probation for four years and told that he can not own animals.
On June 30, Martinez pleaded guilty to one count of negligent homicide, three counts of aggravated assault, and one count of keeping vicious or destructive animals.
He had been facing a second-degree murder charge in the death of 43-year-old Kevin Renguul near South Mark Road and West Los Reales Road in 2025.
According to court documents, Renguul needed 15 blood transfusions and went through two surgeries before passing away. He had to be intubated and was hooked up to machines when his lung and kidney functions declined.

“It’s just sad that Mr. Renguul, fight as he will, these are some pretty big dogs,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said at the time of the attack.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said Martinez’s dogs — mixed breeds, including German Shepherd, pit bull, Cane Corso, and Mastiff — had histories of being aggressive and attacking neighbors.
The PCSD had three previous reports of Martinez’s dogs biting people. Since 2022, PACC has received eight additional reports of people getting attacked by his animals. In some of the cases, neighbors said their pets were killed or injured.
