WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) will remain at a rehabilitation facility as he recovers from a June fall at his Washington home, according to a new health update.

McConnell said Monday that doctors have ordered him to continue an intensive physical therapy program, ruling out a trip to an annual political rally, the Fancy Farm Picnic in western Kentucky.
“I’m still working hard to get back to my full schedule of work in the Senate and in Kentucky,” McConnell said in a statement. “Unfortunately, that means I won’t be able to make it to Fancy Farm.”
The Office of the Attending Physician also released a new update on McConnell’s condition. Doctors said they evaluate the senator every day and have him complete multiple physical therapy sessions to rebuild strength and lower the risk of future falls.
The office said McConnell’s childhood case of polio continues to limit his mobility. Doctors have not cleared him to leave the rehabilitation facility or return to the Senate.
The update marks the latest sign that McConnell’s recovery will take longer than many Republicans first expected.

McConnell, 84, has not returned to the Capitol since a fall at his Washington home on June 14. He later revealed the accident caused a brief loss of consciousness but no concussion, stroke or broken bones.
During his hospital stay, doctors also treated him for a mild case of pneumonia.
His absence has narrowed Republicans’ working majority in the Senate and raised questions about when one of the chamber’s longest-serving members will return to Washington.
Despite the setback, McConnell said he expects to resume his work as soon as doctors allow.
“As always, I appreciate all of your continued well wishes, and I’m looking forward to getting back to the Senate and to Kentucky soon.”
