GRAND CANYON, AZ (AZFamily) — Human remains were found at the Grand Canyon on Monday, National Park Service authorities said.

Details are still extremely limited. A release from the National Park Service said rangers were called to an area near Crystal Rapid on the Colorado River after a report of human remains being found.
Crystal Rapid is about 10 miles downstream from Phantom Ranch, which recently experienced deadly flooding.
Timothy Allen Smith, 52, a pilot who grew up in Granbury, Texas, and now lives in Star Valley, Wyoming, is still reported missing due to the flooding.
National Park Service employees were able to recover the remains and take them to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Authorities have not identified the remains, and no additional information has been released.
Gov. Katie Hobbs said it’s been all hands on deck for rescue and rebuilding.
“We’ve been in close communication with park leadership. They’ve led on the effort and we’ve stood ready to support especially with search and rescue efforts.”

Rescuers used helicopters, Bluetooth-detecting drones and dogs to locate Smith. However, the canyon is a mile deep and has some of the toughest terrain in the country.
It’s been a hard year for the Grand Canyon after the Dragon Bravo fire last summer. Hydrologists point to debris from that fire playing a role in how destructive the flooding was last month.
Arizona’s Family asked Gov. Hobbs, who called for an investigation into the management of the Dragon Bravo Fire, if she thinks inner canyon trails should have been closed.
“These are questions going forward,” Hobbs said. “I hope that the park leadership looks at them and that we have the resources to keep the park safe for visitors.”
