YUMA, AZ (AZFamily) — Federal and local investigators hope a $30,000 cash reward will finally help solve the 1996 sexual assault and murder of a 10-year-old girl.

The FBI’s Phoenix Field Office is offering the reward for any information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the death of Amberly Mendoza.
Just before 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, 1996, Yuma police were called to a home on West 24th Lane. When officers arrived, they found 10-year-old Amberly dead in her bedroom.
Investigators say an intruder got inside the home, sexually assaulted Amberly in her bedroom, and killed her. She died from suffocation.
New details from the FBI and Yuma police reveal there were no signs of a break-in at the home. However, investigators found that the screen to Amberly’s first-floor bedroom window had been taken off.

Yuma police and federal agents are still looking for answers and urging anyone with information to come forward.
