PRESCOTT, AZ (AZFamily) — A tragic scene unfolded Thursday night in Prescott after a child wandered from home.

The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO) said deputies were called around 6 p.m. for a report of a 7-year-old child who walked away from a home near Highway 89 and Granite Dells.
Deputies were told the child was believed to be headed to a creek in the area, YCSO said. A full-scale search immediately began, including a water rescue team.
Just after 7 p.m., the child was found in the water, YCSO said. Authorities performed lifesaving measures, but the child died at the scene.

The child has not been publicly identified.
YCSO issued condolences to the child’s family, friends and loved ones and thanked several agencies and volunteers in the area for their swift help in the search.
