PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A new report shows Canadian travel to the United States fell 25% in 2025, costing the tourism industry billions of dollars in losses. Arizona is among some states feeling its effects.

Return trips were down for 11 straight months, and Canadians spent $2.3 billion less on trips to the U.S. during the year. Experts believe the drop follows President Donald Trump’s comments referring to Canada as the 51st state.
Danny Seiden, president and CEO of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry, said Canada has long been a top trade partner. Canadian residents have become top visitors in Arizona, with some becoming permanent residents.
“We, you know, we welcome the Canadian snowbirds every year who come and stay,” Seiden explained. “But this report shows what we had kind of been feeling, and that is that a lot of that travel is down. Canadians have selected to not travel to the U.S. as much.”
Seiden said Arizona is dealing with the tourism losses firsthand. He said he is hopeful Canadians will return to Arizona and that the state continues to have open arms for travelers from Canada.

“Absolutely pay attention to it. We care a lot about tourism. Arizona has always had tourism as a strong part of its economy,” he explained. “So, to see any kind of a drop, that is concerning to us. However, again, I am optimistic because of the deep ties and as it resumes, because if you look, I’m sure Canadians were not altogether stopping traveling.”
