Brent Hofman remains in the Shawano County Jail on a $1 million cash bond. He is charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. Both charges have added penalties for the victim being elderly and Hofman using a dangerous weapon.

The shooting happened Nov. 12 at a home in the Town of Germania, Wisconsin. A caller told dispatchers Hofman had shot his friend, 67-year-old Rick Roundy, in the home’s garage, according to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Office.

The caller later told investigators that Hofman started shooting “for no reason.”

He later told deputies he locked himself in a building on the property and would defend himself if necessary. Authorities said Hofman tried to enter the building and the caller fired a .22-caliber rifle toward Hofman through a glass door, leaving Hofman with severe cuts from shattered glass.

Deputies said Hofman initially did not comply with verbal commands but was eventually arrested. Investigators said he appeared highly intoxicated and was slurring his speech.

According to the caller, shortly before the fatal shooting, Hofman told the men, “I hope you’ll excuse me if I have to kill you guys.”

The caller told authorities that he and Roundy knew Hofman for about a decade and “never had any issues with him” before the incident, according to the complaint.

“I can’t put this thing any other way, but this is a killing in cold blood,” Shawano County District Attorney Gregory Parker said.
