Woman stabbed at First Watch restaurant in seemingly random attack

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. (ANF/Gray News) – A woman was stabbed outside of a popular brunch restaurant chain in what police called a random attack.

The woman was stabbed in the back at a First Watch restaurant in Decatur, Georgia, on Tuesday afternoon.

“She reported she was eating lunch at the restaurant, and an unknown person came up and stabbed her once in the back. She was taken to a hospital with a non-life-threatening injury,” officers with DeKalb County Police said.

According to warrants, Walter Scrutchings and his mother were at the restaurant when he grabbed a butter knife and stabbed a woman at another table twice.

His mother told police that he has a mental health disorder.

Scrutchings was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. He was denied bond.

Janet Metzger was dining in the restaurant at the time and saw the aftermath of the attack. She was sitting at a table across from the doorway that leads to the restaurant’s patio and saw two women running inside the restaurant, “practically crawling over each other.”
