Phoenix firefighters were called to the fire around 4 a.m. at a home near 45th Avenue and Estrella Drive, east of the Loop 202 South Mountain. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames pouring from inside the house.
Firefighters quickly deployed handlines to attack the flames while ensuring that the family was safely out. The call was upgraded to a first response, with more firefighters and resources requested to fight the blaze.
“They balanced it to a first-alarm just due to the size of the fire and the fact that the house was fully involved once our crews got on scene,” said Phoenix Fire Capt. DJ Lee.
Capt. Lee says firefighters used a defensive attack to knock down the flames, keeping it from spreading to neighboring homes. Crews were then able to extinguish all remaining hot spots.
“They initially tried to do an interior attack, offensive strategy, realized this thing was so fully involved they pulled out, went defensive,” he said.
A family of six will be displaced, and Phoenix Fire’s Community Assistance Program will assist them with next steps. No injuries were reported.

“Fortunately enough, everybody was able to get out before our arrival, which is very fortunate for them. Unfortunately, the house did burn down, but again, all the family members were able to get out safely,” the fire captain said.
Capt. Lee explained how critical smoke detectors are during moments such as these.
“We always talk about how important smoke detectors are and having an escape plan in place just for these events. It’s four in the morning; most people are asleep at this time,” he said.
Firefighters are working to determine what sparked the flames.
