PHOENIX (AZFamily) — American Airlines will be the main carrier at Phoenix Sky Harbor’s future terminal anticipated for 2033, the airport announced Monday.

Sky Harbor is in the planning process for the West Terminal, what will be the airport’s first new terminal in 36 years, and will eventually move American Airlines from Terminal 4 once it’s open.
“Phoenix is a critical part of American’s network and we’re excited to continue to invest in the airport and this region’s future,” American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said in a statement.
American is already Sky Harbor’s largest carrier by total passenger traffic, carrying more than 20 million customers through the airport annually, according to the airline.
The West Terminal, which will be built on the airport’s west side between Terminal 3 and Taxiway U, is intended to accommodate Phoenix’s growing international traffic and improve the traveler experience. It will be the first construction of a new terminal since Terminal 4 opened in 1990.
Sky Harbor is also investing millions to improve and modernize Terminal 4.
“The West Terminal is a game-changing investment in our economic future, and will help us continue to welcome travelers with best-in-class service, set a new standard for the passenger experience, and meet the needs of our growing community. I’m looking forward to working with American Airlines as our anchor tenant in this exciting endeavor,” Mayor Kate Gallego said in a statement.

The airport said it selected American after “extensive research” on what would best fit operational needs and costs. The project will be funded by passenger facility charges, bonds, and airport funding, not taxpayer dollars, according to the airport.
Plans for a new Sky Harbor terminal were first announced in 2024.
As of now, the design details and the number of gates are still being determined. Sky Harbor said it expects to start the design procurement process next year.
Sky Harbor said construction on the West Terminal could potentially start in late 2029, with an opening in late 2033.
