TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – A Tucson man has been accused of running over and killing his father, stabbing his great-aunt, and then attacking two elderly neighbors at two homes near Udall Park early Wednesday, Sept. 9.

29-year-old Samuel Thomas Stangl V was arrested on charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, kidnapping, burglary, and assault.
The Tucson Police Department said Stangl V hit his dad, 58-year-old Samuel Stangl IV, with a car in the driveway of the family’s home near Sabino Canyon and Tanque Verde roads on Sept. 9. Stangl IV’s body was found under the vehicle when officers arrived.
Stangl V then allegedly stabbed his 94-year-old great-aunt, who was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries that included stab wounds to her face, chest, neck, hands, and arms. She was expected to survive her injuries.
According to the interim complaint, the woman said Stangl V “went berserk” when he ran his dad over and stabbed her.
He then allegedly attacked two elderly neighbors.
Those victims, who lived across the street from the Stangls, said the suspect knocked on their door around 2 a.m. and asked them to come over.
Stangl V then pushed the victims, a 75-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man, down several times. The woman suffered a broken elbow.
The victims said Stangl V was speaking gibberish during the attack and said, “You need to be saved.”
Stangl V made his first court appearance on Sept. 12 and is being held at the Pima County Detention Complex on a $750,000 bond. His next court appearance is Sept. 21 at 1:30 p.m.
13 News talked with a man who said Stangl V is his grandson.
“Police told us at that point in time that there definitely was a problem and our son had died,” said Sam O’Shaughnessy Stangl. “Just very simply, we don’t know what happened. I am what is considered to be the patriarch of a family of 135 nieces, nephews and cousins and this is terrible.”
13 News’ Kayla Butter saw glass and blood in the driveway of the home and saw damage to its garage door. The vehicle apparently collided with several objects in front of the home before or after hitting Stangl IV.
VIOLENT MONTH IN SOUTHERN ARIZONA
It was the seventh homicide 13 News has reported on in less than a month.
On Aug. 17, 33-year-old Eddie Lopez was found shot to death near 29th and Craycroft in Tucson.
19-year-old Derek Walker Poff and 18-year-old Angel Francisco Valenzuela were arrested on murder charges.

On Aug. 19, TPD recruit Carlos Ramirez was killed, and his pregnant fiancée was injured in a home invasion near Camino Secoed and Broadway in Pima County.
Alex James Barnett and Santiago Jorge Rogers were later arrested on murder charges and were arraigned on Sept. 9.
On Aug. 19, 31-year-old Enrique Bringas-Galaz was found stabbed to death near Speedway and Euclid in Tucson.
50-year-old Ramiro Regalado was arrested on a charge of second-degree murder.
On Aug. 21, 39-year-old William C. Fitzgerald died in a drive-by shooting in the 3100 block of West Capistrano Road in Pima County.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department released video of the shooting and is asking for help to identify the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call 88-CRIME.
On Aug. 23, 32-year-old Juan Amarillas Espinoza was found shot to death in the parking lot of an apartment complex near Irvington and Calle Santa Cruz in Tucson.
The TPD said no suspect has been identified, and anyone with information is asked to call 88-CRIME.
On Sept. 1, 42-year-old Vincent Anthony Siqueiros and 33-year-old Cameron Davis Capara were shot to death in the parking lot of a gay bar in downtown Tucson.
The TPD said 44-year-old Ousman Ceesay, who took his own life after the shooting, targeted the men and was carrying a list of LGBTQ+ businesses in his pocket.
A search of Ceesay’s home turned up evidence that he acted alone and that the shooting was a “targeted attack motivated by hate toward the LGBTQIA+ community,” according to the TPD.
