The numbers show most of the migrants arrested in July were accused of violating civil immigration laws.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested a record 43,000 people in June and 49,000 in July. The majority of those arrested had not been previously convicted of a crime. Less than 4% of people arrested by ICE in July had past violent criminal convictions.

The increase comes as ICE received a boost in funding, putting more agents on the streets and opening up more detention space. The new data offers the fullest picture of every ICE arrest through early August.

The ICE detention population is also getting closer to a record high.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security said the administration is keeping its promises to arrest and deport criminals, and said anyone in the country illegally was a target for enforcement. However, immigration activists argue the treatment is inhumane.
